While Parker’s insecurities held him back, I’m glad those who love him came through. There is a ton of action, some mysteries, danger, and a not-a-cat. There were funny moments and tender moments. Lots of magic and interesting characters added to the story.

3.5 stars - Greg Tremblay does an excellent job narrating this! Really enjoying the relationship growth and also curious how this overarching plot will play out. The fae magical elements are a great addition too.

A little slower-paced than the previous book, but still a neat sequel. My favorite part has really been learning about all the tiny nuances of this supernatural world. Some of the plot follows as would be expected in terms the stages that romances seem to go through in a book series and this plot relied far more heavily on the air of mystery and whodunit to carry it forwards. Not as fun as the action of the first, but that’s simply personal preference.
Would I go back in time and still read this book, knowing what I know now?
Sure. I think at this point it’s more a cozy comfort of the world than the plot that keeps me going back at the moment.

CHARACTERS: Parker and Nick continue to slowly grow. We do get more glimpses into their vulnerabilities in this book, though to me if felt as though they were being offered up and the characters weren’t truly being ‘triggered’ to grow. But the series is still young and the growth IS happening. I was most impressed with the author choosing to allow this m/m relationship to have shared top/bottom (I really don’t like those terms), rather than designated. It was so refreshing to read that I honestly had to take a moment and just bask in it. Oh, and Parker still has some incredibly witty lines, a few that actually had me cracking up in disbelief.
PLOT: As mentioned, this plot is not as fast-paced as the previous book, though it follows a similar style of focusing on the whodunit of the mystery. In this book it’s less about the main characters however and far more about the murder mystery itself, in my opinion. Compared to the first book I felt it dragged a little bit, but that is possibly because we got spoiled with fast action in the first book.
EMOTIONAL INTENSITY: There is no good/bad here. Sometimes I just want a low-investment entertainment read whereas other times a high-stakes 'I need a therapist to recover' is what I need.
2 out of 5. However, I will admit that there was one moment that actually had my heart stutter I was so excited and wholly invested. So for that moment it was 4 out of 5.
CATHARTIC FULFILLMENT: Is the emotional journey worth it? Do I finish this book feeling that I've crested the wave of the climactic moment and everything has been settled, leaving me settled and fulfilled?
95%. That heart stutter moment I mentioned? It didn’t really have the follow through, so I got super disappointed by that. But in terms of wrapping up the events of this book, yes, and I was happily settled. This author likes to end on a surprise, however, and this book follows the first book in that regard too.

This book gave me the adorable demon cat I never knew I needed.
Really enjoying this series. It’s starting to pick up steam as Parker continues to build a team/family and the mysteries surrounding his history deepen. I appreciated the forward momentum in his relationship with Nick. After the cliffhanger ending I’m really looking forward to starting book 3 soon.
