I enjoyed some more than others, particular favourites were drive my car and kino.

No author spins a tale and has a voice like Murakami. I wanted more from some stories (Kino) and others were meh. Still, I loved reading his work as it has been quite some time.

medium-paced
My favorite stories were Scheherazade and Kino.
3.5 Pretty typical Murakami, which means above average, mostly without the whimsicalness, though. Like Norwegian Wood, except it shows up in a few places. It's a good pairing with the movie Drive My Car--based on a story in the collection--, which is along the same lines but working with a different aim.
murakami confirmed gorillaz fan! a true 4.5 - there were like 2 of the 7 short stories i wasn’t crazy about
3.5
Thought-provoking stories mostly about what relationships with women mean to men (often on an existential level), an angle into male experience I've never quite seen (and I wonder how representative it is, can't tell as a woman). I'm not entirely sure how I feel about his unadorned style; it sometimes didn't feel as real or resonant as I wanted it to be and dialogue often felt flat--but could also be seen as deliberately stilted or allegorical. I especially enjoyed the surreal stories, which that understated rhythm suited well.
