Our tale begins in 1897 with Lady Emily, her husband and two of their friends at a costume party. Lady Emily's friend Cecile confronts a female guest who is not who she claims to be. The woman is posing as an heiress named Estella Lamar. When the imposter runs from the party and is murdered, Lady Emily "takes the case".

The Counterfeit Heiress is the 9th book in this series about Lady Emily. Lady Emily's husband, Colin Hargreaves, is "the most skilled and trusted agent at the crown's disposal". Somehow, Lady Emily usually becomes involved in his cases or vice versa.

I had read the first few books in this series when they came out but I haven't been back to it since then. Although there were some references to past cases or events, I did not feel like they were an impediment at all to the enjoyment of the story. Now I want to go back to the beginning and catch up though.

The narrative is told from Lady Emily's perspective and, in alternating chapters, the perspective of Estella Lamar, the impersonatee (probably not a real word but you get the idea) from the party. One of the main enjoyments of this kind of book is the banter between the main characters and their relationships. There is a little bit of the feel of a romance novel. Don't get me wrong, this is no romance novel, not at all but the talk between Lady Emily and her husband and some of the interactions with the other characters and their development has that flavor. I liked the two narrative perspectives and the investigation hummed along nicely and kept my interest.

I won this book in a good reads giveaway. Glad I did, liked it alot!

Lady Emily Hargreaves and her husband, enquiry agent Colin Hargreaves, are attending the fancy-dress ball of the Duchess of Devonshire in 1897. Her friend, Cecile, believes she sees another friend from her childhood, Estella Lamar. But, she is an imposter and then, the imposter turns up dead, sending Lady Emily and Cecile on a hunt for the intrepid world traveler, Estella Lamar. But who is she in reality? Are those famous photographs actually of her? No one seem to know where Miss Lamar is at any given moment. Is she even alive?

Such a wonderful addition to the Lady Emily series! I really loved the mystery in this one ... so much fun!
