"Why did you come here?" He's really smiling now. "For you, of course."
Brynn lives on a ship that is banished to sea, only allowed to return every so many years. She's always felt a bit out of place, but at least she had her two close friends, Messer and Kai. When their ship is permitted to make landfall, Brynn runs into some trouble when a guard stops her. From here the plot takes off and we get to know some genuinely interesting characters in a world with potential for great storytelling.
"I looked for you. In every market and podunk town, in every corner of every land, I searched each face for yours."
The characters were lovable. I was rooting for Brynn as she fought to claim her birthright. Messer was a delight, and I wish he got more screen time. Acker is an absolute golden retriever and it was refreshing to see a strong, male lead retain their vulnerability without being weak. Each side character has their own motivations and they were fleshed out enough to get attached.
The world was brimming with potential for future books. Fragile alliances across land and sea, long lost royalty, a mostly unexplored magic system, several different players on the board with different motivations... it is a world I would like to continue exploring. Since the writing quality was lacking and many facets of the world have not been explained thoroughly, there is a possibility of plot holes, poorly constructed magic systems, and forced politics.
"You can never get loving people wrong"
So why did it get 2.75 stars? The last two chapters ruined the rest of the book, just for the sake of a mediocre plot twist. The plot twist does not make much sense, the character motivations don't add up, and it takes back any character growth made throughout the book. It left me uninterested in continuing the series.
