DID NOT FINISH: 20%

20% in and nothing has been revealed, nor has the ante been built. I feel like I’m watching someone register for college courses. Unfortunately, I’d rather google what the experiment ends up being and move on to the next.

Like nothing else I’ve ever read - absolutely fantastic blend of idea and execution.

Good read. Most intense levels of torture and pain I've ever read in any book or seen in any movie. Don't know the reality of someone able to endure such extreme discomfort. Does the protagonist survive or does something else happen? Won't give it away. But, it was quite creative. And, how the author was able to tie the terrifying experiment to a historical event in the past was quite ingenious. The only negative was the handful of editorial mistakes and its excessive use of "etcetra". Other than that, a great read that just might keep you up late at night cringing.

In exchange for a 25 year prison sentence, certain inmates are given the option for an excelerated sentence, but they don’t tell you what it entails. Inmates are fitted for an exoskeleton that controls every movement, has extra joints where the body isn’t supposed to bend, heals your wounds while preparing for your next threshold test. Of course there is a reason, and for some, it seems justified.
I love this story. I first read it when it came out and it was great to revisit. It hold up well and I am excited to jump into book two again

A physicist by trade, this is his first novel and all I want to know is: who hurt him?

I have been seeing this book kicking around body horror rec threads and thought I’d finally try it. Wow. Did not disappoint. Just when you think our poor protag has had enough, nope — in come the hornets. Literally.

A very interesting story about pain, the limits of our body, and what do you have left when you have nothing?

I love body horror as much as the next fan but there was something so unique about this torture. Maybe it was the relentless pace, or maybe it was the complete unknowns we were thrown into. Whatever it is, I loved it.

This book pushed the boundaries of everything you knew to be 'right' and made you question them all. I'm still at a loss for words, but I couldn't put this one down. It all starts with a false arrest and a trip to the Red Box. Will has no idea that in a month's time he is going to be completely changed. Leaving the Red Box turns into a matter of life and death.

I really enjoyed this book, I'm a huge fan of medical horror and this definitely fits the bill. The psychological torture and physical torture patients are put through make you grimace. And yet unable to stop from turning the page. It leaves you wondering if such an event is going on right now. And just what parts of history are true, and what parts are fabricated to hide the truth.

Five out of five stars, and eagerly going to be getting the sequel to this one.
