This novel wasn’t quite as good as its excellent precursor, Laidlaw. The plot details often felt obscure and I’m not totally sure I understood all the character motivations. Having said that, the writing is excellent (and sometimes difficult) and I find Jack Laidlaw to be a very interesting/flawed/complex character.

Second in the series from the author dubbed as the father of tartan noir. Laidlaw is a great character who is somewhat aloof from the typical Glasgow police detective, a literary artistic intelligent man with an acute intelligence. In this book, Laidlaw is called to the hospital bedside of a dying alcoholic who lives on the streets. There follows a hunt for a missing student while at the same time several local villains are also keen to find him. Very enjoyable.
