Reading level is high school. Character depth is decent; but barely, and author's style needs refinement. But overall this is a fairly strong debut story. Author has action chapters down pat. Looking forward to reading the rest and to see how the author matures. Story is very reminiscent of Star Trek/BSG/Babylon 5, et al. On one hand, don't expect great complexity; but on the other, you won't be wasting your time. It's a fun story with a lot of potential.
When this book started I was really unsure if I wanted to go along for the ride; I mean it’s a lengthy series. Now I’m 14 books in and WOW! Put down whatever book you’re reading and start The Frontiers Saga asap. It’s funny cause I was looking for the books that inspired the tv show The Expanse and happened upon this series instead and I’m genuinely happy I’m here now. If you have an deep love of science fiction and space exploration like me then you’ll also be completely pleased by this whole series.
Fun light read. It’s so cheesy it hurts at times, but knowing that going in didn’t detract from the fast paced action and overall enjoyment. Upbeat sci-fi is always welcome. Refreshing from the dark doom/gloom I tend to see more commonly in this sub genre. The writing is a bit more on the “tell” than the “show”, which kinda hurts some of the dramatic moments.
Oh, and Aft Aft Aft Aft!

I thought it improved as it went on and I am interested enough to want to continue with the series. Narration was ok, but its hard to compare as the book I listened to before this one was DCC. I would give narration 3.5 stars.

I’m only an hour and half into the audio book, but all the women have either been objectified or called a friged bitch multiple times. Mother and sister had their looks talked about. The next woman introduced was slept with. The next woman was shown flirting with the roommate. The next woman, who the main character is competing with for a high station is rendered to as a “fridged bitch” multiple times. And the next woman introduced causes his roommate to metaphorically drool over a science babe. I’m out, what a waste.
It's pure Hollywood scifi; the less you think about it the better.
Nice quick military sci-fi, bit predictable sometimes, but never the less very entertaining, it reminded me alot of star trek voyager :)

I like a good space opera, but the writing in this book was so poor and the plot holes so massive, I just could not finish it
