As someone becoming more interested in art, this seemed like the ideal book for me. I had expected an outline of the development of art from ancient times to the present day. Instead, the author blows open the historical narratives of some famous art historians, revealing their influences and prejudices. The result is an illuminating insight into the world of art.

Dana Arnold wrote a very interesting short introduction here. I do recommend having some basic knowledge of art history, but many things are explained here without too much fuss. I think it is a book worth reading if you are interested in starting your studies in art history.
