The idea for the book is good and the premise of it is good, but it is not executed well, at all. The characters were impossible to connect with beyond sharing similar labels as a queer person myself. The descriptions of characters and settings were confusing and lackluster and I couldn't keep up with the constant switching of POV's.
Also, what exactly was the point of all those random sex scenes? I love smut, but come on now.
Unfortunately, an exhausting read.

This book is definitely not for the weak-stomached.
I'm content with having read this piece, but it's not one that I'm going to recommend to others. If you're thinking of reading something that is going to make you uncomfortable, go ahead.
The biggest content warning I've got is also a spoiler: very early in this book there is
Graphic: Hate crime, Homophobia, Infertility, Pandemic/Epidemic, Physical abuse, Suicide, Drug use, Car accident, Deadnaming, Rape, Confinement, Genocide, Medical content, Pregnancy, Sexual content, Gun violence, Slavery, Transphobia, Violence, Dysphoria, Emotional abuse, Gore, Terminal illness, Child death, Murder, Outing, Sexism, Sexual harassment, Sexual violence, Toxic friendship, Toxic relationship, War, Body shaming, Biphobia, Sexual assault, Death, Fatphobia, and Body horror

A lot of this book was saying aloud the quiet parts of American society with regards to transgender people so sometimes it was a revelation that other people experience the same things I do and other times horror that things could be so much worse.

But all that gory detail is sort of... refreshing, in a way? I tire of apocalyptic stories that dance around the bone-deep difficulty of staying alive and instead focus on, I dunno, trite romance and neat labels. All the characters in this book are complicated and allowed to be difficult. Why should these trans women be some sort of model minority just because they are the protagonists? They have far bigger things to worry about — like feral man-creatures, militarized TERF gangs, and "I'm one of the good ones!" cis girls who would sell you to Satan for a proverbial corn chip. Damn, just give a gal a crossbow and let's get moving.
