Feels like it was written for me personally.

I enjoyed the story of this book. It was smart, interesting, sometimes funny in a cutting way. But I found it difficult to read nonetheless. At first I was mostly bothered by the way Gretchen wrote the books only fat character, which seemed primarily to make thin people (which I am not) uncomfortable. Like many others, I also found the perspective-shifting to be a bit jarring, though by the end I felt like it made some sense.

When I finished though, I realized that even greater than the extensive fat hatred, which felt more gratuitous than the graphic sex scenes... with the possible exception of the book's primary villain, everyone who gets a close third perspective in this book seems to utterly hate themselves. It's not that I find this unrealistic — the apocalypse has to be hell on mental health. It was just really difficult to read.

I was, frankly, disappointed by this. The premise is cool, and it's hard not to compare it to Andrew Joseph White's Hell Followed With Us, which I love. This narrative, though, felt almost leering, lingering endlessly on the infinite self-loathing of every one of its characters. It felt mean, for a lack of a better word. I think things improved towards the end of the book. Maybe the overt self-hatred was a tool for character development, but it just fell really flat. Instead of any arc, it produced a story that seized every opportunity to communicate an endless list of the faults and shortcomings it found in any trans body. The narrative didn't misgender any of its characters except for in the last few chapters, but I am left feeling like it did at every turn, just because of that leering feeling.

Overall, I liked it, though some of the book was a slog to get through.
The book starts off strong, right in the middle of action and character exposition. The middle slows down quite a bit, I thought, though the last third is all action with satisfying character growth payoff. The ideas and themes Felker-Martin explores are vitally relevant today given the rise of modern fascism and its accompanying transphobia.
