I adore this book. The ending had me heaving big heavy sobs for minutes. Its a dark dark read, especially if you are trans. Because of that closeness, I felt so much more.

 DNF'd at 149 pages - Reading for the #TransRightsReadathon

A bleak, egregious, and dismal imaginging of a post-apocalyptic future where men's final form is foaming-at-the-mouth mutants, XX TERF's become militaristic hunters, and another reality where trans people are hunted to near extinction.

That being said: This is not a bad book by any stretch of the word. In fact, I think its almost too good that this hits way too close to home. Unfortunately, I did not have the stomach to finish it but I hope you do!

In a weird turn of events, this is now the worst book that I have ever read. I knew I was getting into something atypical, something radical, but this was a 300 page dumpster fire. This wasn't really horror, either. Sure there was some gore, but most of the parts meant to be tense or scary felt uninteresting or poorly executed. Aside from that, this felt like Misandry: The Book while also perpetuating the fetishization of non-cis folks. The one trans masc lead was only there for sex and basically nothing else. The personality the two trans femme characters have is completely absen after the first maybe 100-150 pages, one of which is reduced to little more than someone trying to get laid. Even the sex scenes weren't that great, often falling into again a weird fetishization of non-cis bodies or just straight up being bad. Don't even get me started on the one Indian character being called "Indi." I wish I was joking. The most compelling character was a TERF, in a book that is supposed to be so anti-TERF to the point it became "controversial" for killing JKR in the most boring way possible. This was a genuine atrocity masquerading as phenomenal story-telling with an interesting premise. It fell short in so many ways. Given the fact that it's written by a horny, terminally online author who claims there needs to be more sexual assault in the media (????), I'm MORE disgusted thanI originally thought possible. The only reason I gave this any stars at all was for the single compelling character who was- again- a TERF. Absolute garbage and waste of my time.

I thought this book was really well done and very interesting. It was extremely gory, and there was one part in the end that grossed me out a lot, but overall I thought it was very impactful and seemed to me (a cis woman) to have good trans representation. It also provided a lot of social commentary on not only lgbtq rights but also classism, racism, sexism, and nationalism. Overall was definitely worth the read!

This is a book about a group of transwomen trying to survive an apocalypse where they're being hunted by literal TERFS, and so there is so much trans violence, slurs, hate crimes, etc. towards trans women / trans femmes.

A brutal take on the zombie genre, body horror and sharp commentary with diverse cast of characters. Uses the conventions of the genre to create a world that takes the hateful contentions of transphobes to their logical conclusions. Every protagonist is wonderfully complex with insecurities and skills and hang ups and something at stake in the narrative. Might be hard to parse if you aren't familiar with the humour, controversies, and cultural touchstones of the lgbt and queer communities, but it's very clear about it's politics as a novel so when it talks about gender and race it's obvious what it's trying to say. There's also a frequent amount of sex scenes for various reasons and they aren't superfluous as they all say something about the characters involved.
