Full disclosure: I don’t generally read horror.

This book was disgusting, perfect, challenging, and relatable, unfortunately. Not for the faint of heart but absolutely worth it if you can get through the gore 🏳️‍⚧️

I feel like the story was very loose and not well put together. Also my my genre so maybe in bias.

I enjoyed the story of this book. It was smart, interesting, sometimes funny in a cutting way. But I found it difficult to read nonetheless. At first I was mostly bothered by the way Gretchen wrote the books only fat character, which seemed primarily to make thin people (which I am not) uncomfortable. Like many others, I also found the perspective-shifting to be a bit jarring, though by the end I felt like it made some sense.

When I finished though, I realized that even greater than the extensive fat hatred, which felt more gratuitous than the graphic sex scenes... with the possible exception of the book's primary villain, everyone who gets a close third perspective in this book seems to utterly hate themselves. It's not that I find this unrealistic — the apocalypse has to be hell on mental health. It was just really difficult to read.

I was intrigued by the blurb, and the idea of three trans main characters seemed so exciting, but the way these characters thought and interacted with each other felt a bit too toxic to me. Furthermore, all the characters are distractingly horny at very inappropriate moments. I wanted to go further but this style of writing was just not for me.

This book isn't a trans themed apocalypse, it's a compendium of gross sex scenes with some badly written apocalypse sub plots. I got 50 pages in and had to give up at the 10th sex scene. This book was not advertised in the porn section, I picked it up cause it was a queer horror, but it's honestly very fedishey. They constantly harp about never being seen as a woman in the sex scenes and they are full of shame and self worth issues. There are multiple on page rape scenes with and without monsters and every time they go to camp for the night they immediately start fucking. This book was a stomachache and gave me the feeling like I had gotten food poisoning and was about to vomit. And as a final note the writing is tacky, I could have forgiven it if it leaned into the jokes, but it took itself so seriously when the side villan was terfs...
Do not read this book, it's gross fetishist rape scenes.

My only critique of this amazing book is that the switch between characters was particularly challenging to navigate and keep track of when listening as an audiobook.
