I have no words. This was such a great book in so many different ways, exploring all of the struggles that trans people go through. Had a great plot while conveying real life issues. Books like this aren’t seen as often as they’re needed to.

Just wasn’t for me! The writing style and pace were confusing with massive time jumps that I didn’t realise had happened and had to keep going back and trying to find what I missed. There was also a lack of character and relationship development, with lots of new characters introduced towards the end. There are also constant explicit, rough sex scenes which isn’t a “bad” thing, just not my cup of tea.

I definitely see why there are people that love this book. I love a lot of weird gross unhinged horror books. Just not this one!

I had a love/hate relationship with this book. The general premise of the world-building is fantastic and unique, and as much as I hate to say it, were it to become our own reality I'm sure that the world would ultimately align itself in a similar fashion

in that cis women would be more likely to fall into a TERF or at least TERF-adjacent stance, if only due to the uncertainty and fear. Even those who consider themselves to be the best possible ally are still at risk simply due to the drive for self-preservation.

It's a terrifying situation and highlights a lot of ugly truths in reality.

However, the actual story within this world just doesn't do it for me. There's a lot of unnecessary sex scenes and as someone who prefers to avoid an excess amount of that (regardless of sex/gender of participants), I found myself skimming a lot to get back to the actual plot and feeling disappointed. While I understand that an apocalyptic setting inspires depravity and these moments highlight an innate desire for comfort and companionship,

the MC Fran's general poor treatment and better-than-you attitude towards her supposed friends makes things even more unappealing.

While it's not necessarily a horrible book, it is most definitely designed to be an uncomfortable read centered around characters who don't have many redeeming qualities.

This book made me very uncomfortable, and goes at a pace that makes you feel like you can't catch you  breath. The characters were flawed, sometimes to an annoying extent, but in a way that mimicks a found family of traumitized people. I think it's worth sticking through the hard parts, but make sure youre in a good head space before you pick this one up. Especially if youre someone targeted by TERFS & SWERFS.

READ THIS BOOK

I will be thinking about this book for the rest of my life. It’s terrifying and amazing and so impactful. 

As a trans guy reading the pov of a fictional hot cool and strong trans guy with a similar background was awesome. And the trans female leads are so powerfully written. 

It’s just such an amazing book and it’s gotta be my favorite fiction I’ve ever read.

i really loved this one! the writing style felt very “by queer people, for queer people,” with perspectives and cultural references that felt familiar to me, but at the same time i think is engaging and worthwhile for everyone to read! the premise is such an intriguing metaphor and when i first heard “a virus turns all men evil” it sounded like something a cis woman cooked up, and was really happy to see the idea executed by a trans woman instead. as a tme person it broadened my horizons and it was just really interesting to read from the perspective of transfemmes. i do wish there were a bit…more to the book. while the characters do undergo growth, there was no real sense of finality to it for me.

everything after the escape from the screw felt incredibly rushed to me, with the sudden introduction of tons of new characters and confusing fight scenes. when the characters emerge from the turmoil, it’s not quite clear what changes have occurred. fran’s apology to beth felt hasty, and i would’ve liked more backstory about the two of them. ramona’s changing perspective on trans women seemed like it didn’t develop properly, though her ending at least made sense. while beth indi and robbie all had whole arcs i still find myself wanting more. i also think the virus metaphor and its implications could be explored a bit more.

all in all, it feels like more of the first installment in a series than a standalone, and i for one would love to read more.

what the ffffuuuuuuc this book is so fucked up!!!!! wtfwtfwtfwtf such a genius setting and incredible dynamic between the main characters, and teach is the scariest villain ive ever read. and the climax!!!! holy guacamole this book messed me up 😭😭😭

i have little tiny small complaints like the parallel storytelling got out of hand sometimes and was cutting back and forth from scene to scene too fast and made the book feel overly cinematic, and there's little writing quirks like how whenever's there's two characters interacting one of them is always "the <adjective>-er woman" (beth looked at the shorter woman, indi hugged the younger woman, fran glared at the larger woman ...) other things like that that broke my immersion somewhat

all of that said my favorite favorite part of this book is this line from the acknowledgement: "[thank you] to all the trans women i've ever loved, to your perfect shoulders and the arches of your necks, to your lovely wrists and fingers."
