Full disclosure: I don’t generally read horror.

This book was disgusting, perfect, challenging, and relatable, unfortunately. Not for the faint of heart but absolutely worth it if you can get through the gore 🏳️‍⚧️

Despite my dislike of horror and gore, this book really landed for me. It brought to the forefront the way that trans experiences are left out of many future-vision novels. Not that I want to be a part of this particular apocalypse, but it somehow felt really validating and beautiful even in the horror. This book is easily one of my new favorites. The writing is exceptional and deeply smart. Highly recommended if you can stomach the brutality.

I was excited to read Manhunt.  It was even from the beginning unapologetically trans-oriented and had an intriguing concept.  Unfortunately, it fell flat and the characters were almost wholly at fault.  They were unlikable!  I'm tempted to pick it up again over a year later just to see how it ends, but I'm not sure I can get past the fact that I can't root for the main characters.

I tried, I really fucking did. But the whole thing was just a gory rape plot with intense transphobia coming from the folks who weren’t even supposed to be terfs (they were trans). It was just…shock value hell? Or grotesque? A horny orgy of blood and guts and rape.

I feel like the story was very loose and not well put together. Also my my genre so maybe in bias.

This is not my normal genre but I enjoyed it for what it is while recognizing I’m not the target audience!

I feel like the book would do better marketed as a sort of guilty-pleasure read (gory, fun, quick) instead of “book of the year” horror story for everyone to read (just thinking about Roxane Gay’s review on the cover). Often the writing felt really detailed and descriptive but ultimately fell flat for me when it came to character relationships and dialogue.
