I had a really hard time getting into this book. I think some of it may have been my personal bias, as I read Starling House first and LOVED it, and the two are so similar in structure (book within a book, replete with silly footnotes that further the plot) and where it felt fresh and unique with Starling House, I found the chapters taking place inside The Ten Thousand Doors to be tedious at best, downright boring at worst. The main plot was equally thin, and for the majority of the book I felt like I was reading a children's book with children's book stakes. Initially, I understood this as we were reading the thoughts and words OF a child, but as January aged, it felt like the writing did not mature with her and we were being spoon fed major plot points, which was kind of insulting as a reader. Almost all of the key reveals were so heavily foreshadowed that I was able to predict the majority of the plot with accuracy after only a few chapters, and that sucks a lot of the fun out of reading.

I also just found January insufferable as a character. I understood the allegory the author was going for, but most of the time it felt like we were just being told factually what happened, and we wasted so much time on January justifying others shitty behavior and forgiving people who shouldn't be forgiven (ahem, looking at you Dad) and because of that felt like the ending was too rushed and not properly earned (with the big climax to the story happening maybe 20 pages before the end) with January magically transforming rather than gradually unlearning the trauma she experienced growing up. People don't just wake up fully healed, and it felt cheap that January was suddenly a different person, and the plot device that led to her transformation felt cheap, allowing her character development to come from an external force rather than letting January deconstruct the trauma of her upbringing on her own.

This book was really really beautiful. The concept was kind of mystifying at first but it really keeps you in suspense and wraps up pretty nicely at the end.

Very slow start, story doesn't pick up until after 30% in. Beautifully written, but also distractingly flowery. Intriguing concept, very reflective, but the plot was thin and stretched out, so I found it a bit boring. The main character was annoying to me, and the others didn't stand out.

A young woman learns the story of her life isn't what she thought it was. In the end, she goes through one of the ten thousand Doors to find her Home.

There is a book within a book. It felt a little like two short stories brought together in one novel with large sections devoted to one story over the other.

I can't get enough of Harrow's style of writing. Her metaphors and descriptions are like nothing I've encountered in writing before. Everything feels lyrical and alive. It's honestly difficult to move on after reading one of her books because it's like I have a book hangover, but in the worst way. I love the story and the characters, but what I can't move on from is Harrow herself. Her style almost ruins reading anything else after finishing a novel of hers.

Overall, I highly recommend this book just for Harrow's style alone, but it's also a fascinating plot with creative and well developed characters. Yes, it starts off rather slow, but that's extremely intentional. Yes, January feels frustratingly naive, but of course she is given her living situation. This book is all about adventure, imagination, and developing your own life's narrative. One of the top books I read all year and I recommend it to everyone!

I've really enjoyed all of the Harrow I've read so far and can't believe I waited so long to get round to this one which I think is my favourite of the bunch.

It's whimsical but dark, tackles important topics without feeling preachy, and made me cry happy tears.

I have so many quotations highlighted in this book, it's just so beautifully written.
