The twists were sometimes a bit repetitive or predictable, or too chaotic, but still overall a good book.

Adventures, politics and mysteries in a fantasy world controlled by various competing guilds. The setting has muskets and printing presses but there is no magic or fantastical creatures or such. The follows Mosca Mye, a spirited young orphan who, together with her fierce goose Saracen, has reasons to run away from her uncle and aunt and opts to follow Eponymous Clent, a con-man with secrets. They get involved in plots and through a fair bit of luck, Mosca plays important parts in resolving most of it. The story is well crafted with a great ending. A beautiful writing style, various colourful characters, interesting plot twists and even a bit of depth underlying the final resolutions to things kept the story fun for me.

I enjoyed this book, but not as much as I thought I was going to. While I was certainly impressed with the world building, and ultimately came to enjoy the characters, there was so much happening that a lot of it got bogged down in details. Still, I appreciated the creativity & originality of the story and did not predict a fair amount of the twists the book took along the way.

I truly love Frances Hardinge and I cannot wait to read the next one!

This has been one of my favourite books since I first read it when I was 10 or 11.

Mmm, this was cute - I enjoyed bits of it, but as a whole, I wasn't thrilled. I felt like it couldn't fit really in any genre. Because it certainly has elements from Sci Fi, Children's Lit, Fantasy, Mystery... none of it really meshed to me.

I wished I liked it more, but kept falling off the wagon. I would have to put it down and come back after a bit. Which, is unusual for me.

So I may not recommend this. But I enjoyed the idea of it.

Not sure it's really YA. Some of the action is complex, there are a lot of characters and faction, and the theological subtext would have confused the heck out of me any time before grad school. But I loved it. Action-packed start-to-finish. Strong, but developmentally-accurate main character (12yo Mosca Mye who acts much as a 12yo would). Loved the writing style. I am excited for the sequel.

I am a fan of [a:Tamora Pierce|8596|Tamora Pierce|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1209044273p2/8596.jpg]. If you liked her books, especially those with Beka Cooper ([b:Terrier|13829|Terrier (Beka Cooper, #1)|Tamora Pierce|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1294615834s/13829.jpg|3056999]), you will probably like this, too.
