the language in the book caught me off guard at first.. you can obviously tell it was written a while ago, but when you get past that it's truly a great fast-read mystery novel. the first agathie christie i've read and i really enjoyed her way of writing characters, she gives them depth fairly quickly which gets you more invested in the story. the reveal wasn't shocking to me but it was very well thought out. wouldn't give it more than 4 stars though since its nothing mind-blowing, but still a very fun read.

2024 read: A masterwork of mystery. I've read this so many times and still I was on the edge of my seat wondering who and howdunnit. I was reading a version from 1973 though which did mean I got some racial slurs thrown in with my story for free. Hopefully these have been ~amended~ with more recently published versions, and if not, BOO. It definitely marred the experience for me.

I'm really conflicted on how to rank this book. I'm honestly a little embarrassed I read it without knowing the history before picking it up so I'm writing this review as a warning to others. I read a version published in the 90s. Within the first few pages, there is deeply antisemitic and racist language. I understand it is a classic and that times have changed, but the language was offensive to me. Still, I read on. Overall I liked the story, though I preferred Christie's other famous work Murder On the Orient Express better. I actually thought the "twist" at the ending was kind of cheap as it didn't seem all that plausible. I do appreciate this book for inventing a trope so I will credit it for that. Here's why I gave it such a low rating -- I read this book with the title And Then There Were None. That is not the original title. Google the original title and you will learn just how racist this book actually is. I wish I had researched this book before or I would not have picked it up.
