Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman is a beautifully written novel that delves deep into the life of the main character, Eleanor Oliphant. At first glance, Eleanor may seem like an odd and socially awkward individual, but as the story unfolds, we learn about the trauma and loneliness that have shaped her into the person she is today. 

What I loved most about this book is how the author skillfully balances moments of humor and light-heartedness with the darker themes of loneliness, mental health, and trauma. Despite the heavy subject matter, Honeyman's writing style is engaging and witty, making it a surprisingly uplifting read.

The character development in this book is truly exceptional. Eleanor is a complex and nuanced character, and as the reader, I found myself deeply invested in her journey towards self-discovery and healing. The relationships she forms with those around her, particularly with Raymond, are heartwarming and genuine, adding depth and warmth to the story.

Splendidly written, I really felt for Eleanor throughout the book. But it did feel rather slow and repetitive; slow in terms of how her story unfolded, repetitive in terms of her social awkwardness and explanations, and similar encounters. A wholesome book about friendship, love, and appreciating the little things.

I really enjoyed this book. It's think everything I want in a book to feel like an exploratory rollercoaster but still have the cathartic ending that makes you feel good once you finish it. 
My favourite quote is "Aye well - what is it that they say? - try everything once, except incest and morris dancing."

I really enjoyed the writing of Eleanor's character - the story being told from her POV created a tone that kept me engaged throughout. Eleanor is such a layered & mysterious character who at first came off as overly proper even if she often thought & said things that she shouldn't, she had a standard for how she believed we're meant to participate in society. The story unfolds surprisingly yet beautifully at a pace that feels true to what it feels like to get to know a new friend & see pieces of their life and character come together. I particularly enjoyed the trajectory of her relationship with Raymond & how this influences how much more she believes is possible for herself. I also resonated with how tidily she viewed life despite how messy her experiences had been so far & how she took to practicality as a response to all the chaos & trauma.  Even if we do eventually start to see the real impact of her complicated & very traumatic early life.

Raymond is the only good man

on a serious note, it was nice to see someone get better.

I took one of my hands in the other, tried to imagine what it would feel like if it was another person’s hand holding mine. There have been times when I felt that I might die of loneliness. People sometimes say they might die of boredom, that they’re dying for a cup of tea, but for me, dying of loneliness is not hyperbole. When I feel like that, my head drops and my shoulders slump and I ache, I physically ache, for human contact—I truly feel that I might tumble to the ground and pass away if someone doesn’t hold me, touch me.
