Truly one of the best books i’ve ever read, and an even better sequel. I’m writing this through tears.

because I've seen the film I had a pretty good mental picture of what i was reading. great book, loved the extra details that are missing in the film. especially the brief run-through of haymitch's games, and extra characters we don't get to see on screen

thoughts while reading
p227: suzanne collins needs to write about haymitch's games! it's probably the only way we'll ever get a film of it as well, so she must! and while she's at it, how about one for finnick too?
p228: so much for not telling haymitch
p245: not darius! no!

"Careful," he says weakly. "There's a forcefield up ahead."
yeah bro, we got that!

p319: it's great deal easier to catch the foreshadowing of how the games end in this book than it is in the film
p330: aww, katniss is a lot more trusting of finnick than she is in the film and I'm here for it
p364: good job girlie, it is a
clock
. props to wiress for figuring it out ages ago. what happened to her that traumatised her so badly?

Enjoyed this one more than book 1. Kept the fast pace and ramped up the stakes. A solid middle story.

my god this book is a banger. was suzanne collins sent the story in a vision from god because i would believe that

she still very evidently has her limitations as a writer of prose and i still so desperately wish i could hand off the hunger games to any number of writers and say “write the exact same story but write it better.” but i can’t deny ms. collins was working on another level storywise with this one. worldbuilding is still strong, and the character work too.

can’t wait to get to mockingjay, which i recall being received as a letdown of a finale when it was released in my circle (of 14 year olds). i have a sneaking suspicion that mockingjay should have been two books (meaning in a roundabout way that two movies was actually correct…) but we’ll see!
