Really good book, as was the first one. The plot in this book was especially well devised, and the creativity and connectedness of the story definitely surpasses the first novel. This book was a fun read (if incredibly emotional and traumatic) and met my expectations! However, the writing style is a bit ”young”, which can make it a bit boring/unenjoyable at times (not significantly).

Rereading this. It's so good but it still hurts so bad. The introduction of new characters was great and several you start to love with the brief time you have them.

collins is able to raise the stakes and keep you invested in the characters and the plot and even in the new characters. the additions to the lore are fascinating and you want to know more. katniss’ grief and mental state is also interesting to explore but equally devastating.

This is one of those books where I wonder about the characters afterwards because I keep thinking about them. Because both this book and the last feature the main characters in the Hunger Games, the layout is kind of similar. I also noticed more in this book that Katniss plays right into the "not like other girls" trope, which is disappointing. I also felt like narrator choice for this book wasn't quite right. Katniss is a hunting, rough, scrappy character, and the narrator had an extremely proper style of speaking.
