- il professor Lidenbrick è insopportabile e a tratti anche irragionevole
- Hans è sicuramente affetto da mutismo selettivo
- Axel è più lunatico di me ed ha sbalzi d'umore ogni tre righe circa (dal panico all'entusiasmo e viceversa)
- a volte ci sono disquisizioni geologiche decisamente troppo dettagliate e prolisse
- tolte queste parti, lo stile è molto scorrevole
- la storia è molto avvincente e spinge a continuare la lettura

A geologist gets ahold of a manuscript describing a route to the center of the earth and can't resist following the route. Traveling with his nephew (our narrator) and a resourceful but stoic guide named Hans, the company embarks on an adventure through a volcano and into an endless tunnel through the planet.
Spanning sci-fi, fantasy, and adventure, this book was a fun travelogue. At one point, the narrator describes himself as sweating intensely, a state that he's in for several hours without drinking water. The center of the earth turns out to be its own set of biomes. Extinct animals are back. This is not a very hard sci-fi, but maybe for that reason, it holds up remarkably well. I often grumble about sci-fi characters being poorly developed or emotionally unavailable, but there's none of that here. The relationship between nephew and uncle is warm and compelling. As is the book as a whole.
