Al principio de la novela pensé que se me haría complicado mantener el hilo de los acontecimientos, ya que no están narrados de manera lineal, sino que Fuentes nos revela las cosas desordenadas, pero mientras iba leyendo esto no fue en realidad un problema, pude en todo momento estar al tanto de lo que estaba sucediendo. El libro me pareció fantástico, como mezcla todo el drama con las opiniones políticas e históricas se me hizo muy entretenido. Algo que no me encantó fue el hecho que, por lo general, al final de cada capítulo hay un apartado en donde, según mi entendimiento, habla la consciencia de Artemio, y le recuerda su sufrimiento y las razones por las que cada cosa en su vida pasó de la forma en que pasó, pero este lenguaje no es muy claro, ya que parece ser que es algo que ocurre dentro de la mente del protagonista, a pesar que es muy interesante, se me hizo un poquito cuesta arriba leerlo. Más allá de los antes mencionado, el libro es un palo, y me encantó.

I picked up a copy of this 20+ years ago, read about 10% of it, and have meant to return to it ever since. Seeing #OwnVoices from Mexico as a category on the Read Harder 2019 challenge was just the motivation I needed to get finish what I started, and I was quite satisfied. It's been noted that the Fuentes was heavily influenced by Citizen Kane, and the parallels are obvious in the narrative structure and story arc of its central figure. It's still relevant for understanding how egalitarian idealism can devolve into factional warfare manipulated by (and for the benefit of) the masters of the crony capitalist universe to shore up power and short-circuit progressive action. The New Year's Eve 1955 chapter makes for a great textual braid with the New Year's Eve sequence in Roma.

No termino de entender el libro. Los episodios de enfermedad y delirio de Artemio me sobraban. Me ha aburrido un poco. Me ha parecido un poco inconexo. Podría haber estado mejor. Un sí pero no. Casi.

this book felt like a not that satisfying synthesis of a bunch of other Really Good books i’ve already read!!! such is the plight of the mexican i suppose. jk but it was very well done i just stopped caring. beckett does better deathbed scenes and rulfo does better mexican gothic if u can call it that

Para el señor Fuentes el tiempo es una sucesión de momentos sin orden cuyo eje es una par de ojos verdes bajo el tumultoso marco histórico de la revolución mexicana.
Heftig boek, in het begin moeilijk om in het verhaal te geraken, maar eens in de flow gaat het snellll. Niet alleen goed verhaal, maar ook interessant om dingen bij te leren over de Mexicaanse Revolutie. Laatste drie pagina's hebben het voor mij van een 3,5 naar een 4 gebracht :))
