Whispers from the Shadows was such a wonderful book! Roseanna White is truly such a gifted writer! I found myself getting lost in the words, felt myself right there with the characters, experiencing their joys and sorrows, their ups and downs. I truly felt as if I were visiting early 1800's America. There were a couple of really surprising reveals that I did not see coming; I loved being shocked like I was. Definitely one of the best books I've read this year, I can't recommend Whispers from the Shadows enough!

Really enjoyed this second book in the Culper Ring series. Thad was absolutely the best! I loved his character. The story takes place during the war of 1812. I loved the historical details that Ms. White includes in her book. It makes me want to read more about this time period in U.S. history. Looking forward to book 3!

The characters are SO INTERESTING! Gwyneth’s character arc with going through mental health issues while dealing with family drama is heartbreaking but relatable.
Thaddeus’ family secret is intriguing and his chemistry with Gwyn is very wholesome!
The way they both rely on the Lord to guide them through the challenges of war and drama is very inspirational!

The side characters help develop the world well and the antagonists of the story create a lot of tension in the plot.
The way Bennet and Winter Lane are incorporated into the story (with mentions of their “Culper Ring” adventures) feel very natural and they’re a great addition!

I recommend reading the novella “Fairchild’s Lady” before reading this to learn more about Isaac Fairchild and his mission during the French Revolution; it gives more insight into Gwyn’s relationship to her parents. “Whispers from the Shadows” takes place around the War of 1812 so I also recommend learning about the war just to make sense of the historical and political events in the book.

Overall, a great continuation of the “Culper Ring” series!

I don't think I've ever read a historical fiction set during the War of 1812, so that was fascinating, especially since both sides were presented. I really enjoyed having Ben and Winter back as key players and the parents now. However, in the last book, we never saw Ben in his laboratory so I never got a feel of him as the mad scientist that he was portrayed as here, and it didn't feel like it was the same person carried over. I liked Thad and Gwyn and their characters arcs okay, but they were far more physical this entire book than Christian romances usually are and that aspect felt too heavy handed, especially for the era.
Also, although I love their faith and the way they listen to the Holy Spirit, I've never known God to give impressions in that particular way, like a person always being able to sense when their loved one was near (not for any spiritual purpose) making a large part of the book feel fantastical. Despite the incredible plot twist, overall, I didn't love this book as much as I wanted to and rounded up from 3.5 stars.

This was decent. This isn't my favorite series of hers. However, it is nice to read a historical romance novel that is not set in Regency England. I am enjoying the time periods and locations this series is set in.

Per my rating system for Christian literature (On a scale of 1-10 how annoying is the religious aspects of the book. 0: not noticeable to 10: if I were going to read text this religious, I would just read scripture) I would rate this a 6. It tends to get really prosy in places.

Okay, 3 stars might be pushing it, but I rounded up. The beginning gets bogged down in some pretty sappy romance and insta-love, but it finally breaks free and the 2nd half is much better.
