The book of Next to Normal is the script and lyrics to a very honest, accurate, and occasionally harsh show- but harshness is unavoidable if one wants to remain truthful, and is found in the very basis of the subject matter. Anyone that is, is related to, or knows of someone dealing with mental illness can find solace in this play. While the only cheer (other than the last two or three pages) is a stretch of sardonic and often pessimistic wit, readers will achieve more cathartic feelings in the play's lack of true resolution than if a fairy tale ending had occurred, for the reason that to those that experience the events, diseases, symptoms, and emotions expressed, happily ever after is not a realistic conclusion. Sometimes coping, or changing, or praying for any sliver of normality is the best one can do, and the fact that Next to Normal displays this so well is an incredible and moving accomplishment.

It's not hard to understand what goes on when you hear the music, but having the book there adds to it, for you can literally imagine it.

A beautiful musical play about mental health. The story is exquisite and I love how its main goal is to de-stigmatize mental health treatment and to explore how trauma can affect an entire family. Even though it was just a script, it put me through hell and back and I can't even imagine the effect it would have on me if I saw it in person. Huge recommend.
Moderate: Mental illness, Suicide attempt, Child death, and Schizophrenia/Psychosis

It's very difficult to judge a musical on paper, but I would like to see this performed.

Great songs and ideas, but I was bothered by some of the ways it dealt with bipolar disorder, ie not emphasizing Diana's pain, only what she caused those around her. Losing all your memories and hurting your family is going to be very painful. And sometimes Diana's mental illness and hallucinations were used for comic relief which felt wrong. Also therapy and medication was portrayed as only harmful which can be true in some cases but I feel like the overall message about medication and therapy could have still pointed out that it is very helpful (and necessary) for some

I wasn’t a fan of this one. I thought the music was uninteresting and the lyrics were cliche. The plot wasn’t flushed out and seemed more like a summary rather than action. And what was the purpose of Henry and Natalie’s relationship? Cliche is the best word I have for this musical.
