5/10... okay, not great - couldn't empathise with the main character.

Could have maybe been a great short story.

*Did not finish

I slogged through half of this before I gave up. I get that King was trying to build tension, or provide a fully fleshed out character with a good reason to start blowing up construction machines, but it was just too boring to finish.

This one is more like 3.5 stars. A perfect example of psychological horror. There are no monsters in this book except the ones in Bart Dawes own brain. The best part of the book was the way that Mr. King was able to make the highway extension feel like a character.

This story was written in 1981, I'm not sure if it would even have been published in a post 9-11 American society, at least not by a major publisher.

2.5 stars.
“All places are the same unless your mind changes. There’s no magic place to get your mind right. If you feel like shit, everything you see looks like shit.”
“I know something else as well: there’s a place in most of us where the rain is pretty much constant, the shadows are always long, and the woods are full of monsters.”
"Only one thing that bothers me, and that’s a feeling I get from time to time that I’m a character in some bad writer’s book and he’s already decided how things are going to turn out and why."

From the title and the blurb, Roadwork sounds like it is a book about a guy being kicked out of his comfortable life due to a road construction that forced him out of his home and his job. But I feel like it is more about his loss of his son Charlie (this kinda confused me at first with Charlie from Firestarter lol) and how he never recovered from it. And losing his home and his job is like the final straw for him to give up on life. And leave life with a bitter revenge.
Although it feels really slow most of the time, I like how it is a great portrayal of a man unhealed from his loss of his child and gradually destroying himself. I probably should rate this book a bit higher for this very reason but I lost my sympathy toward the guy by the end of the book. Maybe because at times I feel like the book is a bit close to home, I just end up hating Dawes and the ending. And the writing makes reading this a real task unlike other King books I’ve read so far.
