To anyone who thinks that this author is "picking on America", I disagree. I think this book is really about war, all kinds of wars. My reason for thinking that? Here are a coupla quotes from it:
"…[M]ost wars: just a bunch of young men killing young men on the orders of old men. But…it [is] women who [are] left to clean it all up in the end…"
and
"…[T]here [exists] no soldier as efficient, as coldly unburdened by fear, as a child broken early."
That could apply throughout history all over the world.

This was a brutal book. It felt like and alternate future that was just as haunting as what we now face. The brilliance of this book lies in how each chapter takes more from its characters. I felt that there was in general, tons of nods to classic American literature, and as they played out in the book, they crumbled and disintegrated. War is inhumane but totally human. I am glad to have read it, but not eager to sign up for a re-read any time soon.
The cruel twist of war, blood begets more blood. The lucky ones are maybe not the survivors. How people kill each other for ideals, god or just because they are bored of their meaningless existence. Cast against a world destroyed by climate change and political backstabbing. Omar El Akkad wrote about a horror that could be less fictional every day.
