The story was a little slow but very thought provoking. The writing was outstanding.
A poignant novel on an all too plausible future. What if America continued on a path of unrelenting partisan politics? What if an outside power decides to use our division to destroy us? What if the cycle of revenge escalates until we nearly cease to exist? My only disappointment was my unfounded expectation of a twist that never comes. This is the story of a history that, hindsight being 20/20, couldn't end any other way. No matter how much you want to redeem the characters the result remains the same.
While I did enjoy the book, I at times felt like I was reading from the perspectives of “proud-boy” esque sympathizers.
However, I feel like reading books from ANY perspective is important for well-rounded perspective. It was just an unexpected part of the narrative.

Nah. Climate change ain't no problem... Not. At. All.
I made a few efforts to write a review, but they all came out sounding condescending. Read the book; come to your own conclusions. Recommended.
did not finish.
made me sleepy.
interesting premise but the execution triggered my fall asleep button every time.

Tough one to read right now--seems like a peek at an unwanted future. The author does a great job in creating characters with skewed, but realistic, motivations. It is not a perfect novel, but I recommend it highly.
Dark and disturbing, it was a bit slow to start but once I was into it, I couldn't stop thinking about the specific characters and world El Akkad created. I wish he had dealt with race more- it's surprising that a second Civil War in which the South secedes would center so much around gasoline without mention of even the history of white supremacy.
To say this book is simply about a second civil war in the US is way too simplistic. It's so much more complex then that. It's about conflict, about how we see everything in terms of black and white without any flexibility in our opinions. It's for sure about race, about history and about war. And war is only ever about one thing : power. The amazing author of this book really dove in the heart of war, the destruction of souls, the dehumanisation of our "enemies". It's well written. It's eye-opening in today's political situation.
