I'm not specifically a Sarah Silverman fan, but I thought that her reading her new memoir would be entertaining enough for the car. The first half, up until her "groundbreaking" midword section, is very funny as she relates her life up until she finds fame. The second half devolves into a "here's how my Comedy Central show came together," namedropping section. She even mentions in her midword (supposedly as a joke)about how she's running out of material halfway through...and it felt like it. Read the first half and then give it up for something else.

This was a good book. Silverman is funny, honest, and smart throughout. I got a little bored at the end, but that is mostly because I don't find famous people that interesting. As much as I love television and my tv boyfriend and girlfriends, a lot of their real lives when famous doesn't interest me too much (just the babies and cute couples - girl alert - joke, I mean come on I'm a women and gender studies student). The first part of the book talking about her experiences growing up depressed and wetting the bed until she was 14, plus the stuff about starting her career, were really really great. Not for her obviously, but she wrote about it very well.
Sarah Silverman wrote a decent book. Interesting parts: background on her life, the diary rant, and the stories behind her greatest public controversies.
The first half was five stars, then I think she kind of ran out of material. Still, I was entertained...
I love her already, and this book was great. Loved reading more about her growing up and the behind the scenes of her show.
Although I had seem a couple of her youtube bits, I didn't really know that much about Sarah. There were some pretty funny bits here, but as with many memoirs, the funny bits were spread out among some drier bits that were still interesting in a "let's learn about a different world" sorta way.
This is a VERY adult book. Raunchy, graphic, funny. Not appropriate if you offend easily.
3.5 stars. Although most comedian/memoir offerings follow the same basic formula that, for me at least, is starting to get pretty tired; this one still got some laughs out of me. It’s peppered with some really astute observations on racism and sexism, and some thought provoking advice. (Don’t misunderstand me-it’s nothing groundbreaking, but more like an entertaining reminder.) I’m not really familiar with her work outside of small roles, but it’s definitely on my radar now. I can definitely appreciate her perspective, and it’s refreshing to hear from a woman who doesn’t pretend to be lady-like (unlike many ‘I’m so awkward! Lol’-type claims from women who are actually really good at make up and clothes.) I’m a big fan of anyone who knows how to use a poop joke, unapologetically treats herself to things she enjoys, and can articulately point out logical fallacies.
Funny, but light, the latter which applies to my review.
Side note: If you want another woman’s perspective of SNL from the same time (same season even, if I recall correctly) that’s a bit more in depth, check out Laura Kightlinger’s “Quick Shots of False Hope”.
