"[Did he] Plant the swarm of brownies on the mayor's lawn? Promote adoption of the Dewey decimal system in libraries across the continent? It's the not knowing I find most irksome."
"The Dewey decimal system?"
"It's gaining popularity. I don't trust it."
"We'll catch him sir," I said. "I'm sure of it."
I love the banter between Jackaby and Abigail, it's so refreshing to have two main characters be awesome friends who compliment each other so well. This was another fun, quick romp that has continued to satisfy my need for fun and exciting mysteries!

Here, there be dragons. As we continue to follow Jackaby and Abigail Rook around on their adventures, this time we not only encounter a shape-changing predator, but dragons make their way onto the scene.
It all starts out with an archeological dig in a valley not far from New Fiddlehams. Perfectly preserved bones that look to be dragon bones have been dug up and now there is more going on than just a dig and some scaly cats. There is murder, mayhem, and near disaster as Jackaby and Abigail seek to find out what is going on and why dragons have seemed to drop down into this idealistic little valley.

It was so much fun jumping back into the Jackaby series. Definitely need to get my hands on the third book ASAP.
I wish I had liked this one as much as I did the first, but sadly I just didn’t. The fantastical murder mystery of Jackaby really kept my attention. However, this time around, the reader was expected to care about the theft of bones from a dig site. And I just didn’t. I didn’t care. I couldn’t make myself care about the beast or the bones. It’s a shame because I do think this series is fun and unique.
All that being said, this one did end on a pretty juicy cliff hanger, and I still plan to read the third at some point. Hopefully this just suffers from “Second Book Syndrome”. After all, the second book in a series is almost always the worst. I’m still excited to see what happens next.

I really enjoy this series, a sort of paranormal Sherlock Holmes set in a fictional version of New England in whatever is the American version of the Victorian age. This book (like the first) started slow but about halfway through became nearly un-put-downable.
Eh. I liked the first book, but I'm between a 2.5 and a 3 for this one.
