What an adventure! I am loving this series. If you have read [b:Jackaby|20312462|Jackaby (Jackaby, #1)|William Ritter|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1410170969s/20312462.jpg|28147221] and loved it, you must read this one as well.

Eh. It was all right. Nothing mind-blowingly spectacular, and a bit slower than the first one, but I still mostly enjoyed it. The ending, at least, is promising; here's hoping the next book lives up to that premise!

Not as charming or intricate as the first, but an enjoyable and light sequel nonetheless.

Ähm ja was soll ich sagen.

The dragons and kittens are the only thing that made this book for me. It was rather slow and boring, but the supernatural elements were fantastic and saved it in the end.

This series is fine, although I think I liked the first one more than this one. Book 2 had less paranormal stuff and more paleontology digs, which wasn't really my jam. I prefer the ghosts and werewolves. It's cute, but not enough to hold my interest for two more books so I think I'm going to end my reading of the series here.

Loved the overall premise of this one and it was very well done! I definitely felt growth and more cohesiveness from the first book to this one with a great lead in to the third (which I now want to pick up ASAP but have a few more things on the TBR before I do)!

Review as posted on The Book Addict's Guide 3/17/17: I started BEASTLY BONES right after I finished JACKABY because the first book was just so enjoyable and a breeze to read! I thought BEASTLY BONES stepped it up even more and that William Ritter’s writing really improved, not that I thought JACKABY was lacking, but it felt more mature and more put-together.

I loved the fantastical element in this book and I won’t give it away because it was a super fun reveal for me but it was a creature that I was so excited to see, and even that had a turn of its own. The characters handle the situation adeptly, as always, and the mystery was a hoot!

One thing I actually didn’t like was the appearance of some secondary characters that were immediately eliminated in this book. They had such a heavy focus in BEASTLY BONES and it kind of felt like a waste to get to know them for such a short time only to never see them again. There was also a bit of repetition of terms and words in this book that I started to notice a lot (I didn’t need to read “indomitable” 20 times) so that was a little frustrating but I thought the mystery was even more exciting than the first book and it took a different turn as well!

❤❤❤❤❤ better than the first!
Sherlock HOLMES! Attention!! For lovers of SHERLOCK HOLMES..ANNND PARANORMAL!
The books are short, fast paced and totally thrilling! The cover art is beautiful and the characters are completely endearing. The third one comes out this year (so catch up). Love, Love, LOVE this series.

Fun, light... slow start, but entertaining!

Beastly Bones is the second novel in William Ritter’s Jackaby series. It’s very Sherlockian, with a supernatural twist and the books are a great deal of fun to read despite a somewhat shallow depth. If done well and made darker in tone, they would probably make great movies. On to the review!

Once again, I enjoyed reading about the characters, though I feel the secondary characters that were introduced were shallow in comparison with what they could have been. Perhaps this a result of the novels shorter length and my sometimes unreasonable expectations acquired from reading enormous books overflowing in detail and development. I also expected additional development from Abigail, Jackaby, and Charlie but they just stayed the same. Abigail is more confident in her abilities as an assistant and she had the opportunity to go to a major paleontological dig site, which makes her the most interesting out of the three characters.

The plot of Beastly Bones is as it implies, focused on some rather exciting bones found at a New England farm. Events spiral quickly out of control and there are murders and mysterious foot prints that may have come from a living relative of the beast in the ground. As I mentioned in my review of Jackaby, the whodunit is as obvious in Beastly Bones as it was in the debut novel. I had suspicions from the very beginning and at the end I was proved to be correct. This is a young adult novel and as such, I cannot hold it to quite the same standard as I would an adult speculative fiction novel, however I was a little bit disappointed. This author seems to focus more on the events that lead to the characters solving the mystery rather than the mystery itself. As I mentioned, it wasn’t all that hard for me to figure out and there wasn’t a significant effort to obfuscate the solution.

All in all, Beastly Bones was an entertaining and slightly outlandish book with a fun set of characters and a bit of mystery. Or perhaps I should say strange circumstances and events. I do think that the next book has the potential to markedly better plot wise based on the very last segment of the book. We know that Jenny, the ghost residing in Jackaby’s home was murdered but it was unsolved and it seems that the next book will focus on solving that mystery. There are some loose threads that I think will be tied up in book three and will probably relate to Jenny’s murder. Perhaps Douglas will also decide he no longer wants to be a duck- who knows!
