This wasn't nearly as fun as the first one... Hoping book 3 can bring it back!

I did enjoy this book, but I think I liked the first book better. To be fair, I was pretty distracted and in a bit of a reading slump when I read this one, but the pacing felt slow in the beginning. The climax was definitely actioned packed though. I didn't find this book as funny or amusing as book 1 which was a bit of a let down... I thought Abigail and Charlie were super cute. The ending and the hint at book 3 exploring Jenny's past was pretty cool though so I look forward to that :D

I really like Abigail's character a lot. And the case was great, too, especially that there is a bigger mystery continuing.

Mr. Ritter continues to charm and entice his readers with Mr. Jackaby and Ms. Rook in this follow up to his debut. I flew through this story with a smile on my face, snorting out loud at some points, and needing to know what happened in each coming chapter. This series is the perfect combination of adventure, magic, and comedy and deserves high praise! Well done William! 👏🏻

"The greatest figures in history are never the ones who avoid failures, but those who march chin-up through countless failures, one after the next, until they come upon the occasional victory."

This probably sits somewhere in the 3.5 star range along with its predecessor Jackaby. Both of them are extremely well written, fairly lighthearted, and insanely fun adventures.

This second installment in the Jackaby series follows Abigail and her enigmatic employer Jackaby on a new adventure dealing with supernatural phenomena. And it's just as exciting as the first book.

There is a little more exploration of the characters here. Abigail is struggling to figure what she wants in life. Jackaby reveals a few tidbits of information about his past. Jenny becomes a little frightening - and hints are made that we might find out more in the next installment. Charlie is just as stalwart as ever. And Douglas remains a fowl.

One of the things I love most about these stories is how wonderfully Ritter manages to blend historical fiction and paranormal fantasy elements. The stories are set in 1890's New England and they have that feel to them, like your walking the streets of a different time. And the supernatural element is blended so well, mixing actual history into the story in a way that just works.

Jackaby and Abigail have a really nice friendship that has been building since their first case together in the previous book. The banter between them is always fun and quite entertaining. There are several laugh out loud moments in this book.

The writing is exquisite, the characters fascinating, and the adventures fun. They are somewhat predictable at times, but not in an annoying way. If you haven't started this series and any of this appeals to you in the slightest, then I highly recommend that you read this series.

3-3.5

This book was so great! I loved the mystery, and how while things were solved, there's still the puppet master pulling the strings! Can't wait to read more of this series!

Actual rating: 2.5

Idk, I feel like this book suffers from a Secong Book Syndrome, as it's pretty underwhelming and, let's face the truth, pretty boring.
There's too much digging and not enough detective-ing.
I like hiw it pushed Jenny's story a bit further and how it laid some foundations for the last book, but still.. yawn..

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. I adore Jackaby, Abigail Rook, and Charles. Their characters are quirky and so likable. In this second book you'll be dropped right into another case that will keep you wanting to read way past bedtime.
