This book started off strong, and I was wrapped up in the intense worldbuilding. Markhounds? Inverted marks? A future that's gone back to tradition? I thought I'd hit jackpot! Unfortunately it's didn't stay that way forIme. I found the pace agonisingly slow and the characters either bland or interesting. Alexei, the character we're introduced to? Bland. Very reactive. Kasia? Pretty cool, great ability. Natalya? Not sure what she brings to the story other than Kasia's deck of cards. Malach and Nikola? Oh hell yes, now those are two very interesting characters. I love the perfunctory benefit of their arrangement and how it slowly shifts. I'd be interested to read more about them but I'm not sure I want to sit through the other major characters as well. I may eventually try the rest of the series but I'm not desperate to.
