Starts as a wickedly, bitterly, funny and tragic and unsettling swipe at the "crash landing on an alien planet" trope and develops into something more complex and intimate and artful. It is dense and maybe a bit overwrought, and sometimes I found the stream-of-consciousness style confusing, but she is incredible at voice and characterization, and there are some great (mostly very dark) one-liners in the first half. This feels a bit like a two-act play or a very talky, cerebral, movie. Beautifully bleak and idiosyncratic and character-driven and worth the effort to get through even for its imperfections and welcome and unwelcome weirdnesses.

this book tells a really tight, tense story, and then it ends, and then the author just keeps going for about 50 pages too many anyways

I didn't find this very readable with: verbose descriptions, an unclear perspective (when is this story being recorded?), and sections that went nowhere. This story felt like it could have used more editing to me.  I did find interesting the ideas introduced in the first half  but I wanted to see these explored a little more. The second half lost momentum for me as it was mostly focussed on events in the main character's past on Earth, which I didn't really care about.
