The Favor

Nora Murphy

3.7 AVERAGE

This one wasn't for me. Though the writing was good, I just couldn't get into the story. There was just too much of the "I married the perfect man" and "he had politician hair"... While I did feel bad for the women involved, I'm just not a fan of "he was so perfect and rich" and then the guy being a complete douche. And BOTH husband's were like that. And of course there had to be problems with getting pregnant and one is an alcoholic... just a no from me.

I'd like to read something else from the author, though. The writing itself was good, but this story didn't vibe for me.

It was a great read. I couldn’t put it down. I will definitely be in the lookout for more titles by this author.

In the words of Taylor Swift, “They think she did it but they just can’t prove it”

While the book moved a little slow, it was still a great way to start the 2024 challenge.

Women supporting women

I feel that this book starts off strong. I was interested in the characters but as it progressed the story was moving so slowly for me. There was a lot of repetition and I found myself skimming through the chapters.

"Modicum" is my new word learned, and it's used a lot.

Loved the concept of what "the favor" was. Resulted in a happy ending.

At first, I didn't like Leah's rambling and projecting, wondering if McKenna was the same as her—which she was. I didn't know what to expect to happen, but I certainly was surprised that
SpoilerMcKenna's husband was shot
so early in the novel. I was even more surprised by to happen so quickly and like an ordinary event.

I didn't feel super attached to the chapters of the detective's perspective, but I get the point of how he being a man would miss the red flags and similarities in the two women's marriages. I love the contrast between him and Mallory's situation. I wanted to closure and a resolution as to what happens with her though.

A little unbelievable how everything is wrapped up nicely, but I'm not mad because these women deserved it.
