I've been putting off reading this as I was worried it would scare me - I'm very susceptible to horror but luckily it seems I can handle the written word more than anything visual.

This is an excellent book but its hard to say I enjoyed it, IYSWIM? I don't usually enjoy the gothic style but I can see why Perry used it here, to contrast with the fact that not very much actually happens while ratcheting up the tension.

I'm going to be thinking about this for a very long time, which is one of the marks of a great book to me. Particularly I'm going to have to examine what it says about my own philosophy that my final reaction to the book is that if Melmoth showed up for me I would soundly tell her to Get Bent. I think it means I'm not a nihilist? Maybe that's why I'm struggling in this current Tory hell hole. Regardless all the themes of bearing witness, being passive versus active, punishing yourself more harshly than anyone would punish you, the importance of forgiveness - a really complex book, not an easy read but almost a necessary one?

some good stuff about genocide and loneliness and forgiveness. EXCELLENT snowy atmosphere. had some weird ableistic eugenics where it was suggested that disabled people would rather be dead (and maybe should be), which i felt really undermined the strength of the genocide portions. not all the primary documents were equally compelling. i really like how sarah writes though. this sentence of a son describing his father was particularly beautiful to me “I think of him now as a piece of mirror hanging on a wall: empty, unless another man walked past.” (33)
