I really wonderful story that was part romance but also much more. It allowed the main characters to be shown as vulnerable and still being cared for, along with a solid twist of plot and excitement. A mostly positive and gentle resistance against expectations of society.

this started out so strong for me but really fell off once they went to London. the stakes seemed to disappear after about halfway through and just led to Gracewood and Viola having the same conversation over and over, mixed with a random pointless kidnapping plot. i loved the idea here but think it would have been executed better if the book was slower paced or Viola’s identity was revealed to Gracewood further into the book.

I was ready to give this 4 stars or more because two thirds of it were great. I really liked the characters,  even though this book is like 90% insanely long conversations with little to no actual scenes taking place or descriptions. Weirdly, it worked, even though from a writing standpoint : wtf? I like the overall writing and tone.

But from Chapter 39 it gets actually insane in a bad way and nothing makes sense. They introduce this weird villain guy we've seen in only one scene and have 3 pages of him asking both characters to "suck his cock". I have no clue if it's originally some fanfic and the character is a nod to something in the og work so there's not much buildup, but that's how it felt. Like there was NO sex in the book at all until like 80% of it, there's a long long long sex scene of the main couple. Mind you, nothing at all sexual happened ro was mentionned before. there's no sexual desire buildup. Smut is not something I particularly enjoy reading in general, but fair enough. However, it's so weird rhat the whole book becomes just About sex suddenly (???).

Refraining from rating. Not a bad book, but I ended up disliking. A combination of writing style, themes, my own mood.

Overall a good, well-written book with very lovely prose and tender love confessions. This was a bit too slow paced for me, the pacing makes sense for the necessary exposition, but again, didn’t work for me. The secondary characters are amazing, Lady Marleigh is hysterical and Miranda is a delight. Honorable mention to little Bartholomew, a darling and hilarious child. Gracewood and Viola are a charming couple who balance one another perfectly. This unique take on friends to lovers was wonderfully done. I am cis so I cannot say how good the trans representation is, but it felt like it was done respectfully and realistically. There is no explicit transphobia, the only negative reaction to her coming out was because of completely separate reasons, not because Viola was trans. My favorite parts were the multiple love confessions and the absolutely darling epilogue.  I would genuinely read a novella of them living out their happy ending. Wasn’t bad, just didn’t totally work for me.
