...soo, I have a new books to add to my favourites now! I absolutely adored this book, the characters, the idea... It weaves so many important topics together, including female rage, women in a patriarchy, obviously plastic pollution and so much more. The way it is done is eye-opening to issues that we may be stunned and numbed to because we hear so much about them. The characters and their relationships are beautifully crafted, the worldbuilding is great, so overall I can definitely recommend this book to anyone! (I devoured it in just two days btw)
Graphic: Animal death, Bullying, Sexism, Violence, Blood
Moderate: Cancer, Suicidal thoughts, Toxic relationship, Death of parent, Gaslighting

Finding myself immersed in the passionate, mythical, righteous, world of Jelly, the blue haired mermaid warrior, has been the single most inspiring read I have had for quite some time. Magic, marvellous creatures, affairs of the heart & soul, environmental realness, very mindful worldly connections with important oceanic facts are woven in masterfully to a story that carries you on a wave of intrigue & hope. The friends, family & foe we meet along the way manifest a landscape of interpersonal depth that kept me engaged to the very end, & wow, what a way to soar to the conclusion of book one of ‘The Laughter of the Sun’ series!! I am now knee deep among the pages of book two, ‘The Sorrow of the Bees’, & loving the journey so far!!

You want a bad ass little mermaid? That is what you get in this book! I loved this book so much! I found myself staying up late just to see what was going to happen next. This is spicy not for little kids! You won't be disappointed! I loved this. I recommend this book to everyone who loved the little mermaid growing up.

I appreciate the message of this book.
This is an eco romantasy, and honestly maybe the first of its kind. I have to give credit for the research that went into this, which was good and pertinent. The message is also good and important and I appreciate it. The climax and ending was pretty good and page turning at the end.
However, this book needed some editing. It didn’t need to be as long as it was. There were pages of content that could’ve been cut with little impact on moving the story forward. And even with so much dialogue, there was a lack of real character development beyond Jelly and maybe Mori. I’m not convinced on Jelly’s age here; 27 is too old for some of the behaviors she engages in. There is a lot of this that felt juvenile. Also the sex talk? Too much. There didn’t need to be all of that, and there’s not even a proper spicy scene?? It really cheapens the book for me.
I received this book for free from the author in a giveaway but this review was left voluntarily and contains my own thoughts. Special thanks to the author!

I loved this book! The only reason it's not a 5 star review is because it took me roughly 100 pages to really get into it, but I feel that is standard for fantasy books. This is my first eco fantasy and I appreciate all the research that went into this book.
I loved Jellys character development and her journey. I loved the inner politics of the mermaids and think the author did a great job fleshing out that world and showing how the fae/mermaids/humans all share the world and it's struggles. I loved her love story and how her perception changes.
This book gave me the best book hangover, I have already purchased book 2 and am excited to start it!

I didn’t end up finishing this book because it just felt very juvenile to me. In defense of the book, I didn’t make it very far, so perhaps it may have become better later on, but I couldn’t get myself to try to read it long enough to see. I’ve never not finished a book before, so this was very disappointing.
