i love dazai.

this might be one of my favorite quotes of all time, so i’ll just leave the review at this:
"destruction is tragic and piteous and beautiful. the dream of destroying, building anew, perfecting. perhaps even, once one has destroyed, the day of perfecting may never come, but in the passion of love i must destroy. i must start a revolution."

This is a book abt a Japanese aristocratic family that loses their wealth and status in the aftermath of war, through the perspective of a diary written by the daughter of the family. Dazai has a habit of including an addiction plot line in every book I’ve read of his, and this book was no exception. Some plot lines were: sickness/death, divorce, cheating, drug addiction, war, industrialization, and politics (s/o socialism & Marxism). There was also a consistent use of snakes as motifs for impending doom. I liked the mc because she questions her own social position and is honestly the only character in the family that willingly transitions to being part of the working class instead of stewing in what should have been. This was a banger.
