Absolutely heart wrenching book. Loved every second.
The diaries of the declining aristocracy in the aftermath of WW2 in Japan, exemplified by the moral and material transformation of a country and the emotional journey of its characters. A masterpiece from a troubled author

It’s a work I respect more than love. While I did not connect with nor like the characters very much—Kazuko felt illogical, the mother unsettling, and Naoji only briefly compelling—It still is an important work, a reflection of post-war Japanese society.
