Wonderful voice, great characters, intriguing world. Below are my favorite quotes from "The Lies of Locke Lamora."
P. 9- "I might just mean that though you have a very, ahhh, uncompromising view of a certain exercise of personal initiative that we prefer to frame in more artfully indeterminate terms."
P31- "Jean grinned, showing two rows of crooked brawler's teeth in a face that looked as though someone had set it on an anvil and tried to pound it into a more pleasing shape."
P. 86- "Petulance, the natural nonverbal language of the very young."
P. 146- "It smelled something like a keg of bad beer overturned in a mortician's storage room on a hot summer day"
P. 152-" 'Chains used to claim that there's no freedom quite like the freedom of being constantly underestimated,' said Locke.
P. 422-"To say that he was an intemperate, murderous lunatic would wound the feelings of most intemperate, murderous lunatics. "

i'm gonna marry this book. i read nearly everything at a snail's pace, and while it would be somewhat hard to argue that that isn't also true for this one, it's still equally true that nearly every time i picked it up, at least a few dozen pages went by before i had the heart or really the will to put it down again. the whole experience was of discovering something brand new and never before seen, and most of all something good.

Wouldn't have finished this book if it weren't for reading this book along with my friends' book club.

Story could have been amazing. The characters are amazing, the world is amazing, the lore is amazing. The constant interludes just make this book damn near unbearable. Every time this story or a lore dump is beginning to get good, you immediately switch back to another subject. Which means you have to get interested all over again.

Besides that, the descriptive writing is just not really my jam. Fortunately, at about 4/5ths of the book. I finally got interested and wanted to pick it up to finish it.

One of the most fun fantasy books I’ve read in a while. Locke and the rest of the Gentlemen Bastards are a joy, and the story keeps it’s breakneck pace through all 700 pages. Would absolutely recommend

- Ta zar ja nisam kadar da se smešim
I da u isto vreme ubijam:
Da vičem: "Divno!", kad me nešto vređa;
Suzama lažnim obraze da kvasim,
I lik da svemu prilagođavam? -

》 Šekspir, Henri VI, treći čin, scena druga《

I had such high hopes for this book but wow am I glad to be done. I should’ve known this wouldn’t be my type of book when the author of Game of Thrones said he liked it…that’s on me.

Every noun in every sentence has two adjectives describing it. The absurd, overkill manner in which the verbose, flowery adjectives describe each common, insignificant noun drove me CRAZY.

And yes it’s a fantasy world but so many things were just thrown in without explanation or context and I couldn’t follow passage of time because they’d just say “The Seventy-seventh Year of Gandolo became the Seventy-seventh Year of Morgante, the City Father, Lord of Noose and Trowel.” Sorry what?

Could’ve been a super interesting plot but I couldn’t enjoy it. Will not be continuing the series ☹️
