I wanted to like this, but the fusion of the two very different halves of the novel didn't feel properly thought through. Saying that, I did like the idea that you could interpret this as akin to the two different sides of a record, but it unfortunately did not pay off in practice.
Hari Kunzru is a master of dissonance. Every page had me squirming, but I couldn’t look away.
I...did not intend to finish this book in a day, but it's structured in a way that makes you go "just one more chapter" until you've stayed up until 1 in the morning to finish it all. Especially once you get about 2/3 of the way in and the narrative goes all experimental and trippy, but remains just as compelling and thrilling.
This is great commentary on cultural appropriation and white exploitation of black americans generation after generation, wrapped up in a ghost story, written like a thriller. Some of the characters feel a little cartoony at places, but as a whole, this blew me away.
