It was a pleasant enough read but it dragged quite a lot and I wasn’t really connected to any of the characters.

Some questionable/cliché or just weirdly out of place quotes:

I am filled with relief that she is not beautiful like the others. At least I will not be the ugliest one here.” — ma’am???

“He is waiting for me at the foot of the staircase, and when I appear at the top of the steps, he forgets what he is saying to his steward and stares as if he has never seen me before.”

At first it was easy […] and then you stepped in. You and your damned strategies and tactics and pigheaded stubbornness. If you had been content to let things happen, none of this would have come to pass.” — Scooby-Doo reference?
