I will be interested to see how this turns out as a movie....if they ever get around to making it. Some of the story was pretty rough and the ending was wild.

In his introduction, Barry Gifford basically says that this is a literary novel that just happens to have a pulp theme to it. I would say that the opposite is actually true: it's a pulp novel that happens to have literary pretensions. Chaze is a really good writer and knows how to put some great dialogue together. The main thing that keeps this from being better than just a well written noir is that the plot is pretty familiar. It's basically something out of a James M. Cain novel, particularly something like Double Indemnity. I liked this, but there are many other noirs that I would recommend before you get around to reading this one.

She falls in the damn hole. Now that's an ending

Deep noir

One of the darkest noirs you're ever likely to read, characters so dark and rotten they must have crawled out of a grave. The plot is straightforward if you've read enough of these things, but I'll be damned if you've ever come across a pair of protagonists like this.

Not your typical noir. A streak of humanity runs through our two protagonists that keeps you sympathetic, even as they make mistake after ill-advised mistake. Dark(but not cynical) and funny without being cutesy or clever, with a climax that will leave you feeling sad-isfied.
