don’t really remember anything about it other than the writing was meh, and I was mad it ended on a cliff hanger and have to read another book of meh writing (but the plot was worth the investment and I will be reading the second)

Emmett Cooper & Ford Mahoney. Coop is the captain of the Boston bruins and ford is just a regular dude. Ford has a fucky past with one of coop’s best friends, which involves ford’s ex boyfriend. I liked the story and thought it progressed well and kept me engaged.

Oh. My. Goodness. Talk about a cliffhanger! This story is wild and heartbreaking and I'm freaking out a bit! Ford is closeted and has trust issues after some traumatic bullying in high school. His college boyfriend unknowingly triggered that trauma and it led to Ford breaking up with him. He regretted it but his ex wouldn't take him back. That's when he found out his ex was dating a professor. He told the dean and almost got the prof fired. He didn't, since there was no proof, but that ruined things with his ex.
After graduating, he runs into closeted pro hockey player Coop at a bar and they start a relationship that escalates quickly. Unfortunately, Coop happens to be good friends with the professor Ford turned in. He decides to hide the truth for as long as he can, but it blows up in his face. I don't want to spoil anything, so you'll just have to see how badly it blows up.
🔥: These two are pretty steamy together. Nothing too kinky, since Coop is a virgin, but plenty of passion and graphic details. Scenes are quickly paced and romantic.
😆: Not a lot of funny moments in this one. This story is all about the drama!
😭: There are some heavy issues and traumatic events that may make you shed some tears. Plus, a cliffhanger!!! Ahhhh!!
Once you finish this one, you're going to want to start the sequel immediately, thanks to the cliffiest cliffhanger everrrrr. And OMG it's not out until March😭

What a great story, the secrets, the past that has a chance to derail the present. Coop and Ford have a great story. Both men have come to Virginia for different reasons, and neither is looking for anything but time away. A chance meeting in a bar, a hot kiss, and a vacation neither wants to end.
Be prepared for a rollercoaster and an ending that leaves us hanging. The next book in the duet can not get here fast enough.
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.

Hooking the Captain is the first book in the Off the Bench Duet by Kimberly Knight and Rachel Lyn Adams. If you read After Hours Lectures, you’ll recognize the characters here, but if you didn’t read it, you’ll have no problem understanding anything here. It does give you the backstory for these characters a bit, but Kimberly and Rachel do a great job of giving you everything you need here so you don’t feel like you are missing anything. Since I had previously read After Hours Lectures, I was anxious to get Coop’s story, while also being a bit unsure of how I would feel towards Ford. I shouldn’t have worried at all though, this book hooked me right away and I need more of these characters.
Ford and Coop meet when they are both out of town, proving that it is a small world when they realize that they both live in the same place. They immediately hit it off, and things between them quickly turn to more as Coop begins to explore a side to himself that he has kept hidden due to his high profile career in the NHL. Coop isn’t the only one that has secrets though, and as Ford struggles with his past, the knowledge that he must come clean threatens to destroy everything that he and Coop are building.
I really felt for Ford here upon learning more about his past and what he had been through. While it doesn’t excuse his actions, it does explain them and I found myself liking him more than I originally expected. I loved him and Coop together! They had chemistry and were building a strong connection and I enjoyed seeing them both happy. I will admit that I knew things were heading in a certain direction though with all the secrets, and it broke my heart right along with these two as it happened. I hated seeing both of them struggle and just have to hope that things work out as they should in the end. Beware, Hooking the Captain does end with a doozy of a cliffhanger! I cannot wait to get the conclusion to their story in Retaking the Shot! These two both deserve to be happy and I know that the journey will be worth it in the end.
