There are parts where the writing gets bogged down in description, as if already translating from a graphic presentation, which may be how the author saw it as he wrote. There was also excessive iteration of how a character was feeling despair or sadness or confusion, as though the reader audience just couldn't figure it out from the first paragraph or two of each instance. However, it's a definite Kill Bill and Hunger Games predecessor and does have some flair for making the whole battle work and in wrapping it up.
The best thing Kiriyama did in this book was kill Toshinori (omfg that guy was such an asshole)
Chapter 70 was a fever dream and I had to look over the pages again after reading it, like huh?!
Also Takako is a badass, no notes, shes an icon for ripping out Kazushi's eye

This was a uncomfortable page-turner. I think this is better than the Hunger Games; Takami really focuses on the unintelligibility of capitalist/neoliberal society. It was very obviously an allegory for modern society and the interview at the end of the book confirms this. The main complaint I have is that there is a ton of unneeded sexual content, in the U.S. these children are minors and this made me uncomfortable and undoubtedly will make others uncomfortable. I don't think I'll read it again but I think, for people interested in this kind of fiction, this is a good one.
