This is not something I would pick to read, but I felt obligated to try it for my local library's book club---plus, I really enjoyed My Year of Rest and Relaxation. The concept also intrigued me enough to finish the book.

While this has some depth and poignancy as a reflection of loneliness and its effects on the human psyche, I had a hard time reading it. The focus is not clear--I know it's because of the protagonist's mental state, but it didn't work for me--and the narrative is brutal. There's an intentional killing of an animal that's particularly unpalatable.

If you're looking for something different, you can give this one a try; it just isn't for me.

There are many things about this book which I admired and appreciated for their clever intent and the talent required to execute them. There are also many things about this book that I found less than enjoyable to read. We follow 72 year-old Vesta after she discovers a mysterious note about the dead body of a woman named Magda. This note leads Vesta to conjure a detailed backstory for Magda as well as what her life was like and who would have wanted to kill Magda. Vesta, who lives an extremely isolated life by her own choice, becomes utterly consumed with Magda and crafting her story. As the reader we are almost entirely in Vesta’s head as her conjecture turns into her truth, and through her recounted memories, we learn Vesta has lived her life much the same way, letting her assumptions and conjecture shape what she believes to be true about those around her. Being in Vesta’s head was frustrating at times, and the middle of this book (As Vesta notes about mystery books) definitely dragged for me.
