A fun and witty twist on the old school whodunnit that gives you the satisfaction of working some of it out yourself but still manages to surprise you. I especially liked the book-within-a-book premise and I had so much fun finding the connections between the fictional detective novel and the “real” mystery in the world of the book. Magpie Murders is modern, genre-savvy, and original without sacrificing the charm and delight at being clever for cleverness’ sake that I love about its iconic predecessors—other favorites of mine like And Then There Were None and Sherlock Holmes.

Magpie Murders is an instant favorite—a love letter to the classic murder mystery that still brings something new to the table.

The premise was clever. I know a lot of details in the book were supposed to be red herrings, but holy crap it was so damn boring.

An excellent whodunnit within a whodunnit. For someone who has grown up on Christie, and Inspector Morse it was a pleasure to read a murder mystery set around the genre of Murder Mysteries. Horowitz is adept enough to switch styles within the book. So much so I will now be interested in reading his other books.

Easily the best book I have read this year. I will be giving copies to friends at Christmas.
A mystery within a mystery, both stories very engaging. A little gay subplot. I read this book slowly, I didn't want it to be over.
Very smart, very engaging, loved it.

A wonderful murder mystery set in a small English village in 1955, it is definitely reminiscent of Agatha Christie's style and detective Hercule Poirot.

This is actually a story within a story. There's the 1955 murder mystery, along with the subsequent story of Susan Ryeland, the editor who will be publishing the book in present day. The structure of the book is so intriguing! I'm not going to divulge much of the plot in order to avoid spoilers, but suffice is to say that you should just buckle your seat belt and go along for the fantastic ride! It kept me guessing until the final pages. I'm looking forward to the second book in this series - Moonflower Murders.

Reader be aware: It is sometimes difficult to follow the multiple characters and to figure out whether I was reading about the 1955 events or the present day characters and events. I read the Kindle version, but ended up checking out the print book from the library so I could go back and re-read certain sections. There's also an audio version of this book, but I can't imagine trying to keep everything straight while listening to the stories.
