le Carré is the master of the spy thriller but in the post-Cold War world he rightfully cast his eye at the might of corporations and the plight of the needy. This is a work that captures late-2oth century zeitgeist.

Le Carré's best novel by far, and different from his others... amazing read from beginning to end.

I don't know what it was about this story, but I simply could not visualize the correct time period for it! Perhaps I'm just not accustomed to the author's style of writing, but I kept picturing this set in the 1930's when it made obvious reference to current-day issues and amenities. Overall, it was a different read from my usual, so I appreciated that about it. I just could never get truly invested into the story or the characters. So few of them were likable, even the ones who were meant to be. I think I might have more luck with a different title from the same author, so we will see.

Took me 7 months to finally finish.
It's a slog without any decent pay off.

This book attempts to be several things - a murder mystery, a love story, a denunciation of the global pharmaceudical industry, an expose of diplomatic politics - and doesn't succeed at any of them.
