One of the best classic books I read so far.
4.5
Clumsier than Dosty's other masterpieces. Strong start and end, but the middle 75% is mostly melodrama and hard to take seriously. Psychologically, Nastasya Fillippovna interested me more than the Prince

The book has countless unforgettable scenes. It has definitely made me think about my own life.
As a thought experiment, the book is somewhat depressing but justifiably so. If Prince Myshkin had a real weakness it would be his short-sightedness. Dostoevsky shows that life has complex dilemmas, and a pure simple-hearted approach will make you eventually run into a wall. You can't satisfy everyone, you can't even satisfy yourself. It's as Myshkin states, by speaking his thoughts, he ultimately degrades them.
It's a book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading but probably wouldn't open again for a long time. I don't know if I'm willing to handle the emotional abuse again, knowing how it all turns out.

I picked up this book in an airport bookstore and have been trying to get though it for more than two months. While I appreciate the novel and it’s historical significance it was a huge drag and I wish that the airport bookstore had Crime and Punishment instead. Nothing interesting happened for most of this novel until the last 20 pages. I respect it but I will never read it again.
