I have never read a book with a sadder ending, or a novel that has left more impact on me. Is Prinz Myschkin a saint? An idiot? Or a mentally ill man? I think he is all three. Diving into a world he doesn't belong to, the price's innate innocence is met by appearances, greed, and craving for power. It poises the question on wether any honest man can survive in modern history's predatory social circles.

The characters are memorable and each shines in their own way. Their misery will touch your soul and make you feel sorry for them. Highly recommended read for the buffs and novices of russian literature alike.

There was nothing wrong with it, I just wasn't in the mood to read it at the time.

Not a single likeable character except for Lizaveta Prokofievna - mother of 3 girls and without a doubt the pants-wearer of the family. Everyone is a fickle, self-centred scandalmonger here- except for the hero, who is literally an idiot!

Maybe it is Dostoyevsky's intention to show us that a person who is the very embodiment of purity and altruism has no choice but to be trampled on and ruined by the very society he tries so hard to be a part of?

An unnecessary amount of importance is given to topics which are UTTERLY irrelevant to the plot (looking at you General Ivolgin's highly annoying and entirely false story about him being BFFs with Napoleon) whereas KEY plot points are given all of 2 sentences.

Quite a dark and unexpected ending which, for me, came out of nowhere. The book pales in comparison to Crime & Punishment, the only other book I've read by the big D.

I hate the turgid long-winded writing. I don't like a single character in this book, even the main character whose  supposed to be a Christ-like, (innocent to a fault) figure but I found his naivete insufferable rather than charming. Every other character either is greedy, narcissistic or both. I can't stomach it any longer.
